This simply fantastic, 19th century Palmer Cox Brownie Staffordshire Pottery / China Cigar Stand measures approx. 8" tall and 5 3/8” in diameter at the base.
This wonderful Cigar Stand features a charming Figural Candlestick at the center in the form of Uncle Sam - the Palmer Cox Brownie Character. He stands with his hands in the pockets of his red and white striped pants and wears a blue jacket over a white shirt. His facial elements include the earliest hallmarks of Palmer Cox Brownies – a wide wry smile, “bug eyes” and large ears that stick out from the sides of the figure’s head. He is surrounded by 3 containers – a barrel shaped container behind the figure that would have held Cigars, a stone water well shaped container that would hold Cigarettes and a second stone water well shaped container that would hold matches. A depression in the base in front of Uncle Sam would hold spent matches. There is a match strike surface on the right hand side of the match holder element of the Smoking Stand.

There is surface chip at the top of the front edge of the Match Holder elementbut otherwise the Cigar / Smoking Stand is very well preserved. The colors are bright and vibrant and there is no staining or discoloration to the glaze or the underlying pottery base. "The Brownies" were the subjects of a series of publications by Canadian illustrator and author Palmer Cox, based on names and elements from Celtic mythology and traditional highland Scottish stories told to Cox by his grandmother. The text and illustrations were aimed at children and "The Brownies" stories were published in magazines and books during the late 19th century and early 20th century. The Brownie characters became famous in their day, and at the peak of their popularity were a pioneering name brand within merchandising of all types.
Not unlike fairies and goblins, Brownies are imaginary little sprites, who are supposed to delight in harmless pranks and helpful deeds. Never allowing themselves to be seen by mortal eyes, they are male, drawn to represent many professions and nationalities, all mischievous members of the fairy world whose principal attribute is helping with chores while a family sleeps.
While first appearances of Brownie characters in a print publication took place in 1879, it was the publication in 1887 of the first compilation of their tales titled "The Brownies, Their Book" that really launched their worldwide fame. With the rise in popularity of the Brownie characters, these were used in many venues of merchandising, such as games, blocks, cards, dolls, calendars, advertisements, package labels, mugs, plates, flags, soda pop, a slot machine, a bagatelle game and so forth. George Eastman applied the brand name in promotion of Kodak's "Brownie Camera", but Palmer Cox reportedly never received any money for the commercial use of his work.
