    Grading Details:
Abbreviations used above refer to the American Numismatic Association (ANA) Grading System as follows: (These descriptions are very brief; for detailed description, see the ANA Grading Book.)
BU = Brilliant Uncirculated – “New,” has never been in circulation but may have bag marks. The Mint State (“MS”) numbers from 60 to 70 refer to how nice the coin appears. The higher the number, the closer to “perfect” the coin is. MS 63 = “A mint state coin with attractive mint luster, but noticeable detracting contact marks or minor blemishes.” MS 65 = “Has full mint luster but may be unevenly toned or lightly fingermarked. A few barely noticeable nicks or marks may be present.” For more details, see the ANA Grading Book.
NOTE: Some well-struck Uncirculated Mercury Dimes have very clear horizontal bands on the reverse. This characteristic is usually called “Full Split Bands” (abbreviated FSB) or sometimes called “Split Bands” when the bands are not as fully struck or fully “rounded.” Mercury Dimes with Full Split Bands command a substantial premium above other uncirculated dimes.
AU = Almost Uncirculated – Small amount of wear on the highest points. (high points of hair, diagonal and horizontal fasces bands on the reverse) Usually a highly lustrous coin. (AU+ = so close to “new” that you will need a high-powered magnifier to see any wear.) XF = Extremely Fine – Very light wear on the high points (high points of feathers, hair, neckline, reverse bands) VF = Very Fine – More wear than XF. Some flat spots on high points. F = Fine – Moderate to heavy wear. Hair braid nearly gone; vertical lines on reverse lack sharpness. VG = Very Good – Most details in hair and wing are worn smooth. Rims are complete. Part of the vertical lines in the fasces are visible. G = Good – Well Worn with very little detail remaining. AG = About Good – Date and mint mark, if any, readable but worn; Wear extends into lettering around rim.
    Split Grade:
I use “split” grades to describe an “in between” coin. For example “VF-XF” means that the coin is better than Very Fine and may have some of the characteristics of Extremely Fine, but it isn’t quite good enough to grade it XF. Another example: G/AG means that the obverse or front is “Good” but the reverse or back is “About Good.”
To be fair to everyone, I don’t close auctions early, so please don’t ask. Please e-mail any questions at least 24 hours before the auction closes.
Ten percent of the net proceeds will be donated to Chosen Children of Promise to assist orphaned and destitute children in Nairobi Kenya. My wife & I helped found this organization when we lived in Nairobi, 2003-2005. Contact me for more information. Thank you.
    Listing Errors:
Because I usually list several hundred coins per month, I occasionally make a mistake in the listing, usually by loading up the wrong photo for the listed coin. If you notice a photo that obviously doesn’t match the listing description, please bring this to my attention before bidding so I can correct the photo promptly. In the event a listing ends with a discrepancy between the photo and the listing description, the description will be what I’ll go by to make the delivery. Questions? Please ask me for clarification as needed.
