1944 US Army Air Force letter explaining death benefits to the parents of Lt Williams S Jackimczyk of Northampton, MA. Jackimczyk was navigator on a B17 which was shot down at sea in the Solomon Islands on Dec 1st 1942. All were lost save the tail gunner who managed to bail out. Signed by Lt Col Dudley S Dean, originally made famous as the Harvard quarterback who scored the winning touchdown against Yale in 1890 (the first Harvard won since their original meeting in 1875). He was a member of Teddy Roosevelt's "Rough Riders" and was involved in the charge up San Juan Hill. Includes an original postcard acknowledgement of receipt of communication concerning Jackimczyk from the Veteran's Administration.
