Super-rare and exceptional screen-printed poster promoting the 1969 Monterey Trans Am racing event held in Monterey. Poster was produced locally, by Nils Westerland in Felton. The graphics are fantastic, featuring a brightly colored print of the Parnelli Jones Trans Am Mustang, Boss 302.
This is a rare bit of ephemera, likely intended to hang in store windows in advance of the event. Poster measures 25" x 18" (65cm x 46cm). In excellent condition.
The race, held August 24, 1969, was the inaugural Trans Am race at Laguna Seca that counted toward the series championship, although the Trans-American Sedan Championship — as it was originally known — had competed at the circuit as far back as 1966 during events such as the U.S. Road Racing Championships.
The 1969 field was loaded with big names in both the over- and under 2-liter groups. Parnelli Jones in the Bud Moore Ford Mustang Boss 302 ran well before dropping out of the race with a differential failure. George Follmer, in the second Bud Moore entry, retired later in the race after a wheel failure.
Mark Donohue took the checkered flag in the Penske-Hilton Camaro, followed by Ed Leslie in another Penske-Hilton Camaro, while Dan Gurney took third in the Shelby Ford Mustang Boss 302.
The Monterey event proved so popular that the 1970 Trans Am season kicked off at Laguna Seca in April. That day, Jones sprinted ahead to take the victory over Donohue and Follmer.
