Description
GJPawAuctions is pleased to offer an antique br
onze figure of Garuda.
Garuda
is one of the three principal animal deities in the Hindu Mythology that evolved after the Vedic Period in Indian history.
Garuda
is the son of Kashyap, a great sage, and Vinata, a daughter of Daksha, a famous king. He was hatched from an egg Vinata laid.
Garuda is depicted as having a beak, talons and wings of a bird along with the body of a human. He is the mightiest god of birds, the enemy of serpents, and the mount for Lord Vishnu, the Hindu god charged with protecting and maintaining the welfare of humankind.
In some countries he even became a symbol against the illnesses caused by snake venom.
He is also a dharma-protector and Astasena in Buddhism, and the Yaksha of the Jain Tirthankara Shantinatha. Arguably, Garuda can fly anywhere to protect man’s interests.
Garuda
is much revered by devout Hindus and other religions for his ethics and his strength in applying his ethics to correct evil-doers.
This superb figure measures 1.25 inches in width by 1.5 inch in depth by 2.5 inches in height (3.17 cm by 3.81 cm by 6.35 cm). It dates at least to the 19th century, and shows wear commensurate with an age that could be much older. A fine collector’s piece for anyone interested in Garuda, Hinduism, Vedic mythology, or Far Eastern art and religion in general. It is guaranteed authentic.
