This is a mint, in the box condition Antique Gentleman's pocket container for matches, with a young nude lady motif that was considered quite provocative at the time. I have had one that was dated 1905, so they all are circa early 1900s. Almost all men of this period smoked, and this container held the wooden match sticks that could be struck on just about any surface to be lit. Obviously, these matches needed a secure metal container to carry them around; and designed to be stored in a vest, jacket or pants pocket.
This match holder is made from nickel plated steel. The top & bottom have the a thin rope pattern border design; and the side panel marked with the retailers London address, but this piece was made in the USA by the well known maker Whitehead & Hoag Co., incorporated in 1892, and soon became the largest manufacturer of advertising novelties in America. There is a small hinge at the side that allows the internal spring to open and close the match safe securely. The interior spring is strong, and the top opens and stays open; and closes with a strong snap. This pattern has rounded corners and an oval embossed ribbed panel on the bottom for match striking. The front panel of a red headed nude lady holding a platter posed with a pig creates an eye-appealing design that would have been considered quite risqué, and would have been favored by a Sporting Gent, Gambler, or a Man with an eye for the ladies; who would offer an associate a match in a Victorian period Gentleman's gesture. This Advertising piece was a specialty match safe that was presented to purchasers of large quantities of the advertisers products. This piece is in mint condition for it's extreme age of 110+ years. The inside body is very clean inside and out. The front display side nude panel has nice colors and with none of the typical light surface scratches from pocket wear. The celluloid has naturally occurring slight darkening to a cream color. There is one minuscule dot of naturally occurring aging on the back, non display side near the right top edge. The orginal cardboard box which is almost never found, is included; and as can be expected, has a tear to the top and is missing the flap.
Match safes with pretty women are hard to find in any condition; and nudes in Mint condition command a premium. This eye appealing piece would be perfect for any smoker, match safe, Tobacco, Saloon, Pretty girl / nude admirer / collector, Bar room, Gambler or Sporting gentleman's display; and could still be used today. About 2 3/4" tall x 1 1/2" wide x 7/16" thick; weighing 1.2 ounces or 33 grams.
