Braided Dacron fly line backing is crafted from braided polyester, tightly woven into an amazingly strong thin strand. It's a perfect balance of thickness and easiness of making knots on. The braided texture adds more strength and reduces stretch, while the low coefficient of friction minimizes the wear on the guides, when it comes time for it to fly through the guides!
