Northern India Domed Shield "Dhal" (fist/wrist shield)
    18th-19th century
You are bidding on an authentic, beautiful example of a c. 18th-19th century damascene steel
domed shield or Dhal, very finely detailed and ornamented with stylized floral motifs with four raised bosses front, and the original securing metal rings and silk pad on the back. (see photos)  The dhal is a type of shield found in the Indian subcontinent, and are nearly always geometrically round and vary in diameter from about eight inches to twenty-four inches - this one is 11" diameter and weighs 1.5 lbs.  The Indian dhal is a variety of "buckler" - a special form of fist shield (faustschild) that was a small, usually round shield that was used for personal defense in the Middle Ages. This dhal, is of the kind that is convex with edges rolled back in the reverse direction to that of the curvature of the shield. Dhal shields were either made from metal or hide - this one is metal, that is ornately decorated with enameled and painted designs, red background in the center portion with an outer ring with black background.   The four metal bosses are ornamental, and also served as attachments for spikes which could be used offensively along with parrying blows. The dhal is held by two handles fastened to ring bolts that pass through the shield and are riveted to bosses on the outside. Between the handles is a square cushion for the knuckles to rest against.
This is a beautiful example of the type, finely decorated, clean with undamaged surface, minimal wear and intact,
please review the photos in detail to get a better picture of the fine, excellent condition of this very nice shield. I will include a wood stand for display.
    Provenance:
My father was a well-known numismatist, who had professional interest in ancient coins as well as personal interest in antiquities and unusual currency.  He was the primary source for many of my acquisitions, in addition to auctions and other dealers. I began my collecting in this field in the 1950s when I was a teenager, and while I haven't added to it in over 25 years, I've enjoyed displaying these pieces for years.  This piece in particular I've displayed on a stand or hung on the wall for more than 40 years.   Now it's time for the next "steward" - who can care for this object with the same respect and affection.
