You are bidding on a beautiful illustration art lithograph of Herb Ryman’s original 1964 concept painting of New Orleans Square titled NEW ORLEANS SQUARE GENERAL VIEW personally signed by - Herbert D. Ryman -
Herb Ryman’s stunning conceptual drawings of Walt Disney’s Disneyland have inspired viewers since his very first drawings of the proposed amusement park were created on the weekend of September 26th and 27th, 1953 as Walt looked on. Since those very first drawings that helped to secure the needed million dollars from the bankers to build Disneyland, Walt’s fabulous park was always in a constant state of moving forward. Some projects at Disneyland didn’t happen overnight or in a weekend. New Orleans Square was one that came on and off the drawing board for nearly two years. New Orleans Square was seemingly destined to go nowhere in its original layout.
One day when Walt was making his customary rounds, he stopped by to see Herb and said, “Well, Herbie, I guess the guys have dropped the ball on that New Orleans Square.” Herb replied that he had some ideas and said that he knew how New Orleans ought to look, he knew how it ought to be, but it wasn’t his project. Walt’s response was, “It is now! Do anything you wish. I’m coming back at noon tomorrow and I want my Square!” According to Ryman, “Evidently, Walt was pleased with what he saw that next day. I believed that the winding streets curving out of view would arouse people’s curiosity and invite them in to explore. It was twenty three years later that my 1964 detailed rendering of New Orleans Square was selected for the first piece of Disney artwork to inaugurate the State Department’s Art in Embassies Program. Frank Wells and Marty Sklar (then President of Walt Disney Imagineering) offered my painting to our American Ambassador to France for display in the U.S. Embassy in Paris.”
Herb Ryman’s talents were responsible for the beautiful original concepts drawings for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle Walt Disney World’s Cinderella Castle and both iconic Castles at Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris. When ever Herb spoke of his famous New Orleans Square Concept Painting he was always pleased to point out that the “Street Painter” wearing the beret in his creation was Ryman’s close friend and long-time Disney Imagineer Collin Campbell.
