The Lion King
Painted Background with Presentation Cel Overlay (Walt Disney, 1994).
The Lion King
opened to critical acclaim on 6/15/94. It has spawned Direct-to-Video sequels and prequels, an animated TV Series, a global Broadway Play mega-hit, and a soon-to-be live-action treatment set for 2019. On February 11, 1995, Walt Disney Studios held "The Art of the Lion King" auction in New York. It sold the original hand-painted production backgrounds used in the film with one-of-a-kind hand-painted presentation cels. The cels were painted by the Disney Ink and Paint Studio located on the studio lot, using the actual hand-drawn animation drawings for each scene. The sale had over 200 original background setups and ten specially painted maquettes. This is an original pan production background measuring 43.5" x 12.5", stamped on the reverse, "Property of the Walt Disney Company." It was lot 128 in this sale, featuring large images of Shenzi and Banzai, two of Scar's hyena guards. Matted with an opening size of 42" x 11" with an overall mat size of 50" x 19". A Disney seal is on the cel. This is one large piece with two large images, measuring 9" and 19". It should be noted that in 2016 this film was selected in the US National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as culturally, historically and aesthetically significant. Any and all production artwork for this film is considered rare and important.
