This match safe comes from an estate sale that included a huge collection of rare antique match safes and holders. It is an original 1860's figural match safe depicting the head of the first comic strip character in England. The character's name "Ally Sloper" comes from the English expression for slipping away from creditors by "sloping down the alley." It is two sided. It has the original registration number on the bottom edge although it is difficult to read. The push button still works but the lid does not close all the way.
Measures 2-3/8 in. x
1-1/2
in.
The paint is very worn and the lid has some warping at the very edges.
See photos for details. Great collectible piece!
