Description
Offered here is a solid sterling silver match case/vesta in the shape of a sentry box, with an enamel raised cartouche of a Queen's Guard soldier in full military dress, wearing a traditional bearskin hat on guard duty The vesta is stamped "sterling" on the base but there are no other marks that I could find. The roof of the sentry box lifts up on a hinged lid to reveal the match compartment and there are strike grooves on the base. The roof is sturdy, opening easily and snapping shut. The vesta and enamel are both in very good condition, with only some light scuffing on the silver. That white dot in photo #2 on the upper right side of the enamel is a reflection from the camera and not a defect in the enamel. There are no chips, scratches. or dents. Vestas of this type were originally produced by noted British silversmith, Sampson Mordan, in 1886 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887. Those vestas depicted soldiers from the Queen's Royal regiments.Today, they are highly collectible but tend to be very expensive.
The example being offered here looks very similar to the Sampson Mordan, and I think every bit as nice, but it
IS NOT
Sampson Mordan. and
DOES NOT
carry the same age (or price) as the Sampson Mordan vestas. This vesta measures approximately 2 1/4 inches high, 1 inch wide and 1/2 inch deep. Shipped USPS
