Unusual Pearl Harbor Remembrance – War Bond Related
Offered for your consideration is a printed certificate for purchasing an extra War Bond in remembrance of the fallen of Pearl Harbor. The central vignette features the seal of the United States Navy Department, with a spread-winged eagle before a fully-rigged sailing ship. Above this is printed, in bold letters,
“REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR”
, with
“Sixth Naval District”
and
“Charleston Navy Yard”
flanking it to the left and right. Immediately below is
“War Bond Certificate”
, followed by the dedication
“Awarded to Gurley J. Miller”
. The body of the document states that
“This certificate is awarded for your voluntary participation in the NAVY PAYROLL SAVINGS PLAN and for purchasing an extra War Bond during the December 7 Navy War Bond Campaign. This expression of tribute is dedicated to the men of our Armed Forces all over the world who are sacrificing their lives so that the Freedoms of our people may be made secure.”
. The printed signature of
“JULES JAMES”
in his capacity as
“Rear Admiral, U. S. Navy”
and
“Commandant Sixth Naval District and Navy Yard, S. C.”
appears at the conclusion, along with the date
“7 DECEMBER 1943”

A dark blue flag bearing a minuteman with two crossed anchors and stars in the corners appears at the lower left (while not identified, the seller believes that it has something to do with the Navy War Bond Campaign). The document is executed in black ink on reasonably thick off-white stock. The back of the piece was left blank. This is the first document of this type that the seller has encountered, though presumably, with the active participation of the population during the Second World War, other pieces such as this must exist. Still, given the number of the “Greatest Generation” that we lose every day, this would be a great reminder of the patriotism and unity of those men and women. It is especially poignant since it refers to the “… date that will live in infamy …”. A great item to add to any World War II collection.
This unusual piece exhibits signs of period use and subsequent storage, probably from being proudly displayed. Moderate toning has imparted to the paper a beige to light tan hue, though the original color is actually unknown. Scattered stains are present across the entire surface, with a heaviest concentration in the upper third and at the lower left. Numerous folds are noted, though the majority of these are located around the perimeter. Two pinholes can be found at the top, obviously put there so the piece could be shown off to all who passed by. Several small tears are mentioned for accuracy, as these could be easily matted out if the piece was framed. Measuring approximately 8.50 x 10.50 inches, this piece would look wonderful framed with a picture from the attack on Pearl Harbor.
