Vintage 1900 Italian Sorrento Marquetry Mosaic Match Holder Vesta Case

Ware or Mosaic Marquetry – inlaid wood to form mostly geometric patterns – match holder which measures close to 2 ½ inches by 1 2/3rds inches dates to approximately 1900.  Made in the form of a book, the base wood is olivewood and the spine is painted like the spine of a book.  The sides, however, are inlaid with miniscule colored pieces of wood which form very intricate patterns, both geometric and floral.   The pages of the book are the striker and both ends, which are attached with hinges, open to reveal the matches.   One tiny corner of the book is missing; the match holder was probably dropped, and although the mosaic is mostly intact (one tiny piece is missing and one is damaged), 2 small pieces of wood are missing where the brads are on one side. This match holder is thus in good to very good condition.
