Description
This leather covered Camera-case style match holder has a hand carved ox-bone male deer on the front and striker paper on the back.It is 2 ½ inches tall, just under 1 ¼ inches wide and ¼ inch deep plus the carved panel with the stag standing on a raised log.
This match holder weighs 0.4 of an ounce.
Marked on the lid in gold letters is the French word FEU which normally means “fire” but in this instance, it is the word for ‘a light’.
On the top of the lid are two holes through which should pass two pieces of twine which are attached inside.
The twine extends through one of the holes but has been cut or broken inside the match holder and does not extend out the other hole.
Normally these pieces are tied together and when pulled, keep the lid tightly closed.
Because one side of the twine does not extend above the hole, the lid does not close tightly.
I think that someone more dexterous than I could replace the twine.
This match holder probably dates to the early nineteen hundreds and comes from Dieppe, France which is known for this type of bone carving.
The carving and leather are in close to excellent condition.
Postage should be around depending on where it is going. I do not charge for packing and handling. Thank you for your interest and your bid.
