    Description

Vintage Gullah handled tray basket was made in the South Carolina Low Country. Sweetgrass basketmaking has been a part of the Mount Pleasant community for more than 300 years. Brought to the area by slaves who came from West Africa, basketmaking is a traditional art form which has been passed on from generation to generation. The materials used are Sweetgrass, Bulrush, Long Leaf Pine Needles, and Palmetto Leaves.
This is basket measures approx. 12 inches in diameter x 9 inches high at the center of the handle.  It is very common for the palmetto wrappings in Gullah baskets to come loose.  This one has some missing and broken wraps and around 4 or 5 repairs that have been made with needle and thread.  This can be seen in the photos.   This is a nice older basket   - not a newly made one.  This basket was used and cared for. It will make a great addition to a collection.
