Cel Paintings are the final step in the intensely laborious process of animation. The artistic process begins with the storyboard, which illustrates the action of the script. Next the animators create pencil drawings which give life and movement to the characters. After the drawing is transferred onto acetate either by hand or by xerography, artists of the Walt Disney Studios Ink and Paint Department then hand paint the cel.
A cel painting is made for each movement in the action of an animated character. The cels are photographed over master backgrounds and projected onto the screen in rapid succession, 24 per second, creating the illusion of motion.
